Funding for Home Care Services in Australia

Home Care Services in Australia

There might be a time in life when you have reached a stage where you feel that you could use a little bit of support. This is what the home care packages & the My Aged Care scheme is for. A recent study revealed that most older Australians prefer staying in their own home. Whilst not all of them can afford professional care services, there are different types of subsidies from the Federal Government that have made home care affordable.

About Home Care Packages

Whether you are a self-funded retiree, or have no substantial income at all, Homecare Packages can be of help if  you need the support.

The Four Steps for Applying for a Home Care Package

Applying for a home care package in Australia is quite simple. It involves a four-step procedure:

  1. Call on 1800 200 422 or  contact My Aged Care via their website to apply for an assessment: You will be taken through a short assessment to determine if you meet the criteria for aged care support. Make sure to keep your Medicare card handy while applying.
  2. Face to face meeting: After you have contacted My Aged Care, they will arrange for someone from the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) to call you for a face-to-face meeting in your own home. During ACATs visit with you, they will assess your needs by conducting a range of assessments as well as asking you about how you manage your daily activities.
  3. You will be contacted via mail outlining the services you have been approved for. If you have been approved for a home care package, you will be placed on the national queue. It might take some time to receive your package and you can call My Aged Care to receive an estimate of your wait time.
  4. When your Home Care Package wait time is under three months, you will receive a letter from My Aged Care recommending that you start looking for a Home Care Package Provider to best suit your needs.

Utilizing Your Home Care Package

Your chosen Home Care Provider will work with you to customize your services to meet your care needs. It is important that these services adapt over time to meet your changing requirements for support.
